Understand your search engine options

The TAFE Student Portal http://www.tafe.sa.edu.au and some TAFE library homepages come equipped with a "Search" button.

Click that button and you'll be in the driver's seat of a
search engine
!

A "search engine" lives up to its name: it's a powerhouse of a database builder which is fuelled by keywords you supply. It works like this:

  1. you type keywords into a search box on the homepage of a
    search engine – like http://www.mamma.com/

  2. the engine combs perhaps millions of Web pages, looking for
    matches to your keywords

  3. the results are organised into a results list and presented on-screen

  4. as the engine driver, you scan the list – either selecting the pages/results you think are valuable OR deciding to run a revised search, based on a different
    combination of keywords

  5. finally, the engine links you to individual items in your results list, when you click those items.
